Inclusive Design for wellbeing at work
Sickness absence costs a staggering £100bn a year in the UK. The biggest cause of this is stress, although 93% of staff don’t report the true reasons for absence to their employer.
Creating a relaxing atmosphere in the workplace has been proven to increase wellbeing and productivity by around 25%.
Inclusive design following biophilic design principles can dramatically increase productivity and reduce sickness rates in the workplace.
Biophilic Design
Biophilic design promotes human connection with nature, taking elements from nature, and applying them to buildings.
Biophilic design has shown to increase attentiveness by around 10%, improve efficiency rates by 12% and promote a 13% reduction in staff absence.
Biomimicry
The systems and processes of nature are efficient and effective. By mimicking these in our building design, we promote sustainability as well as the well-being of the people who use the building.
Neuroscience
The brain is wired to understand and accept the sensory signals we get from nature. Non-natural things, such as straight lines and unnatural colours alarm the brain. Biophilic design incorporates nature signals to calm and relax the brain.
Multi-sensory design
The senses work together, not separately. We understand the way the brain works, which areas of the brain the senses are processed in and how messages can be distorted to ensrue that our designs work with the brain, not against it.
Neurodiversity
We all process the sensory information our brains receive differently, but the ‘neurodiverse’ population has significant differences in how their brains process the world. It is estimated that some 10% of the population have dyslexia, 15% ADHD and 5% dyscalculia, but most of them don’t know it. Buildings designed with neurodiversity in mind will help everyone function and feel better in the space.
